Why should toddlers be artists?

Actually, your toddler is already an artist!  From day one, your child is
creating new experiences, learning to express herself, and exploring her
surroundings.  Every new concept and idea introduced stimulates her
creativity and inspires her to express all the new emotions she is
experiencing.  As infants grow into toddlers and preschoolers, they are
bombarded by new words, people, sounds, sights, motor skills...Intuitively
these young people seek out creative outlets for expression of all the new
feelings they are experiencing.  It is said that completing a painting is
worth a year of psychotherapy!  As toddlers are still developing their
communication skills it is crucial that they have positive, creative outlets
with which to express their emotions, be they love, frustration, happiness,
sadness, even physical pain brought about by growth spurts or new teeth.
Our natural instinct to heal ourselves and share our experiences is to
create.  I believe this is most important for toddlers as they are
experiencing so many new things that they can easily become overwhelmed
and frustrated.  I also highly recommend it for parents as well!
Creating works of art, whether paintings, sculpture, or music, is therapeutic
on so many levels.  It can be both calming and energizing, an outlet for
stress-relief or simply a source of inspiration.  Many toddlers take long,
deeply restful naps after art class, having cleared their minds and hearts,
and I've had parents tell me that their child is happier and less frustrated
during the days following their art class.  Painting is a positive outlet, and
when shared with other children, can really be transformative.  Most
toddlers naturally collaborate with their classmates and share freely their
brushes and paints, creating some truly amazing works.  They also develop
social skills in a completely different environment than gym classes or
playgroups, as the atmosphere is about creating rather than kinetic
stimulation.
