What can we expect at art class?
Every class is a new experience, for the teacher as well as the
students. Each art class evolves to meet the needs of the children that
day, from moment to moment. Some classes will work on one project
intensely from beginning to end. Other days we will jump from
collages to painting to drawing with chalks.
Art class first and foremost is about nurturing children and
providing them with a safe place, all their own, for artistic expression.
Only positive encouragement is spoken, and all instruction is given to
motivate and encourage, not to imply form or correct technique.
Parents are encouraged to lead by example, not only through
participation in art class but also in encouraging and appreciating their
own creativity as well as their little artist's.
Toddler art classes are fun and messy!! There are no limits to
exploration in art class as long as the children feel safe and
comfortable. We do not use drop cloths or prohibit creating art on any
surfaces, every inch of space is truly your child's canvas, including
your clothing! Parents, at some point you will be painted on so please
come to class prepared for this to happen. Also, as art class is a
parent-child experience, and while we love it when our mommies and
daddies make new friends, we ask that parents remain close to their
child(ren) and are really part of class.
Sometimes art class is inside our studio, sometimes we are outside,
and oft times both. Our studio is 100% for the children and they have
no limitations to their creativity. While our classes have grown
tremendously over the past year, we have chosen to keep teaching
from our home, as we are committed to keeping classes affordable.
But more importantly, we want the children to have complete freedom
over their environment. If they want to paint the ceiling or collage
the door, they are encouraged to do so. Also, please dress your child
according to the weather. We recommend having some designated â
€œart class outfitsâ€ (which become their own works of art). When
we are outside, children are more stimulated and being in nature
really gets the creativity flowing. The difference in the works they
create when outdoors as compared to inside the studio are obvious, and
it really increases their energy! We encourage the children to be
themselves and express their creativity in their own way. Our job is to
gently guide them into channeling all that energy into art. We have
painted rocks, plants, and flowers; children have used myriad tools for
painting and drawing including tumbleweeds and tall grasses... Each
class is beautiful and unique.
Typically toddler art classes are 45-50 minutes in duration plus clean-
up. However we always want to encourage artistic expression and if
children are still hard at work on their projects they may stay as long
they desire. First and foremost, we are about nurturing children. We
love getting to know our parents and kids and really strive to create a
personal, family-like atmosphere. Almost all of our parents renew
every cycle and we have become a great little community! So, really,
when class runs over, we don't mind. Also, if you are running late,
just let us know and you may stay over as needed. If for any reason
you cannot make it to art class, please call us as soon as you can and
we will schedule a makeup class. We understand completely that
things come up and are happy to accommodate. However, if you do not
call you will not be able to make up the class. This is common
courtesy and a good example to set for your little artist.
Our goal for each class is to encourage the gifts and artistic
expression that are already present in all of us. Learning to develop
creative thinking is essential for life and stimulates other areas of
thought as well. We also want parents and their children to have fun
and leave art class feeling refreshed and inspired…
